3H – Land of Fire and Ice

3H’s theme Land of Fire and Ice explored the dramatic landscape of Iceland with its glaciers, geysers and volcanos. They began by producing continuous line drawing sketches of the landscape contrasting the jagged and curving lines of mountains, lava flow and ice. They explored hot and cold colour palettes, mixing different shades of paint.

And so began the first exciting art piece, painting hot and cold colours to give the feel of fire and ice. The children then layered on detail using oil pastels and chalk pens before finally sewing on stitches, gems and sequins.

3H discovered how textiles art can also combine colour and line. They used running stitch in their own textiles art to sew fabric shapes onto their tie dye fabric and stuff them with wadding to create mountainous landscapes. Both their perseverance and sewing skills were excellent!

It was fun to explore volcanoes by creating plasticine models. When we cut into these, the magma chamber, vents, lava and ash clouds were revealed. Well done 3H. We learned such a lot!
